Children sitting together on a carpet in a shelter courtyard, working through homework in the afternoon

Arjun Is Learning Again

Arjun is seven years old.

Not long ago, his life changed in a way no child should have to experience. Both of his parents died, unable to continue under the weight of what they were carrying. What that left behind was a young boy with no one to go home to.

There is no simple way for a child to understand something like that. No clear explanation that makes it make sense.

When Arjun arrived at the shelter in India, he came into a place that was already moving — children waking early, folding their bedding, sweeping the floors, preparing for the day ahead. At first, he was just trying to keep up. Now, he is part of the rhythm.

He wakes with the others. He helps where he can. And he stands in line with his backpack, walking to school alongside children who now know his name.

Arjun is studying in the Standard II curriculum — sitting in a classroom with other children his age, learning letters, numbers, and lessons that stretch his thinking. Some days are easier than others. Some days require more patience. But he is there, and that matters.

In the afternoons, he returns to the shelter courtyard. A carpet is rolled out. The children sit together, working through their homework. The older ones lean in to help the younger ones when they get stuck.

Arjun listens. Watches. Tries again.

Afterward, they gather for a short devotion. Then the space changes — the carpet rolled up, the courtyard opening for play. Laughter returns. A ball moves quickly in a circle as the children kick and volley it back and forth.

Life keeps moving.

In the evening, the long table is set. Dinner is shared. The courtyard is cleaned. Mattresses are laid back down side by side. And the day ends the way it began — not alone.

Arjun’s story did not start here, but it is continuing here. He is learning again. He is surrounded by people who see him. And he is part of something steady.

Nothing can undo what he has lost. But his future is no longer defined by that moment.

If Arjun’s story stayed with you, there is something you can do. For $468 a year — just over a dollar a day — you can sponsor a child like Arjun, providing everything they need to be safe, fed, educated, and loved. Every child in our shelters has a story. Every sponsorship helps write the next chapter. Sponsor a child today.
